The Strand Zone · Week 5

You Couldn't Have Won Anyway

Every loser's best lineup still loses, three managers get every decision right, and the quarterback complaints keep aging badly.

For once, the bench is mostly acquitted. Every losing team in The Strand Zone would still have lost with its best possible lineup. Three managers actually submitted perfect lineups. One of them lost anyway. After a month of pointing at unused points and shouting, this newspaper has been forced to investigate the possibility that sometimes the other team simply has more.

Dirtbag Dynasty remains unbeaten, Maye keeps converting our earlier jokes into evidence against us, and the Sub Station Retirees delivered the week's highest score. Team Osteoporosis has lost four straight, including two under the new name. Team Osteoporosis has successfully demonstrated that a rebrand can preserve every recognizable feature of a failing business.

The Matchups

Dirtbag Dynasty 139.88arjunpatelmb 128.2

Dirtbag Dynasty is 5-0 after surviving the perfect-lineup graduate by 11.68. Gibbs scored 35.2, Likely 26.9 and Jacoby Brissett 25.78. Last week's tight-end guessing game finally landed on the correct floor: Likely stayed in and comfortably beat Kraft's benched 9.1. The elevator appears to be working. We reserve the right to revoke this finding next Tuesday.

Kenneth Walker started for zero while Tuten scored 10.6 on the bench. Tre' Harris supplied 2.6, and the roster left 17.1 points available overall. The former Van is now winning with a vacant passenger seat and several items rattling around in the back. Five wins, 737.56 points, and still enough imperfections to keep everyone else irrationally optimistic about their chances.

arjunpatelmb made every available correct decision for a second straight week. Parker Washington jumped from 1.5 to 27.4, Burrow scored 24.6 and Nabers 23.6. Jefferson returned to the lineup for 15.8. The manager whose Week 1 bench contained a victory now has nothing left there to blame. Last week's advanced course turned out to have no extra credit. A perfect 128.2 loses to an imperfect 139.88, which should be printed on the fantasy football enrollment form.

Sub Station Retirees 159.14Team Osteoporosis 111.8

The Sub Station Retirees scored 159.14, led the league and left zero points available. Watson bounced from 6.2 to 29.3, Evans added 22.8, Lawrence 22.74 and Henry 20.5. Last week's benched Brian Robinson supplied 1.6 this time and remained seated. Sometimes the correct response to a missed explosion is to resist chasing the smoke.

Johnson beat Loveland again, 3.6 to 2.9, winning a tight-end contest that could have been conducted with pocket change. The Texans defense added 16. The Retirees have gone from losing by 52.34 to winning by 47.34. Retirement apparently includes time for a very thorough rebuttal.

Team Osteoporosis started DJ Moore for zero while Sutton scored 8.8 on the bench. Montgomery added 1.1, so two lineup slots combined to produce less than a rounding problem. Bowers supplied 19, Dobbins 14.4 and the 49ers defense led the entire team with 20. Even the best available lineup reaches only 122.9. There were mistakes, but no rescue. Last week the results recognized the new team name. This week they forwarded the mail.

Maye set my lineup 152.46Professional Ball-Knower 124.76

Maye set my lineup has now earned the right to say the name without anyone offering assistance. Drake Maye scored 39.46, the week's highest player score, and Jaylen Warren added 33.8. Those two supplied 73.26. Stafford's 27.32 remained on the bench, correctly, and the entire lineup was perfect. We have checked. The complaints department would like a transfer.

Kyle Pitts finally returned to the starting lineup for 12.7 after last week's benched 6.2. Chase added 16.7 and Kyren 16.6. Deebo scored 1.5 and Tre Tucker 5.5, but neither had a better available replacement. That is the unpleasant detail for a newspaper built on hindsight: even the ugly parts were right. Two consecutive wins above 150 have made the Week 3 calculator jokes considerably harder to circulate.

Professional Ball-Knower has lost twice since starting 3-0. Irving's 30.5 and Adams's 19.6 did their jobs. Chase Brown scored 5.5 while Stevenson delivered 16 unused for a second straight week. That improves the score, but not the result. Even the best lineup loses by 17.2. The business card still says Professional. The last two invoices have been returned unpaid.

IR Merchant 145.24Unc Dak and the Juniors 126.54

IR Merchant recovered from its first loss with 145.24 and a new quarterback solution. Goff started for 28.94, Cook supplied 22.3 and Shrader kicked 21. The kicker has scored 37 across the two weeks since Trey Smack's 1-point farewell. That is an excellent personnel decision, and significantly more production than the word kicker usually promises.

Harvey finally started after last week's benched 14.3 and scored 0.7. Lamb fell from 32.8 to 1.9. Braelon Allen's 18.1 and Tyler Warren's 17.9 covered the missing contributions. Only 6.5 points remained available, and the 18.7-point margin gave the Merchant room to survive the familiar experience of correcting last week's mistake just in time for a different one.

Unc Dak restored Dak to the lineup and got 14.64 against Shough's benched 1.84. Last week the wrong quarterback comparison accompanied a win. This week the right one accompanied a loss. Puka's 29.2, Pickens's 23.5 and Jameson Williams's 17.7 provided real help, but Love scored 2.2 while Croskey-Merritt had 14.2 unused. Even the full best lineup falls 1.9 short. The first victory did not include a repeat-customer discount.

D.Achane hang low 124.9Hailee Steinfeld FC 108.48

D.Achane hang low won with Smith-Njigba's 20.3, Garrett Wilson's 19.9 and McBride's 17.1. Reichard added 16 and the Broncos defense 15. Corum jumped from 2.6 to 14.7 in the lineup, a welcome reversal of the usual sequence where useful points arrive just before someone gets benched. Kamara fell from 20.3 to 1.6, but this time the support staff covered the shift.

Hailee Steinfeld FC got 31.5 from Allen and lost again. Both wins came when he scored below 20. All three losses came when he cleared 30. The relationship is now statistically annoying. Collins fell from 27.3 to 8.1, Bijan from 27.2 to 13.8, and Waddle supplied 3.8. Seattle's benched 9 beat Jacksonville's 2, but even the best lineup loses. Last week's help has apparently put in for leave.

Draft Receipts, Still Open

Sixth-round Maye has 94.22 points, just behind twelfth-round Stafford's 94.98. After all that vindication, the backup still leads by 0.76. Gibbs has 140.2 for Dirtbag Dynasty, while seventh-round Watson has 96.4 for the Retirees. Draft value keeps arriving. Occasionally it even arrives in the lineup.
