Competence Is Not a Rewards Program
Two bench changes would flip a loss by 0.02, the Van becomes Dirtbag Dynasty, and IR Merchant sets another perfect lineup.
The Van has changed its name, but apparently nobody changed the engine. Mahome is a Van now goes by Dirtbag Dynasty, and the same roster has won three straight. Professional Ball-Knower is still perfect in the standings. IR Merchant is still perfect in the actual lineup. And Maye set my lineup is still providing evidence that the name should be treated as a warning.
Week 3 finally freed Hailee Steinfeld FC from the winless club and gave Brock Bowers his first points. Team Taylor started both Bowers and Mahomes, made mostly sensible decisions, and lost anyway. We regret to report that competence is not a rewards program.
The Matchups
The former Van won by 62.8, the week's biggest margin, and put up the league-high 150.54. Jahmyr Gibbs scored 37.9, Drake London 23.9, Lamar Jackson 20.44 and Kenneth Walker 20.3. London, who managed 11.4 combined in the first two weeks, has finally joined the convoy. The new name says dynasty. The score offers supporting paperwork.
Last week the Patriots defense led this roster with 23. This week it scored -1 and they won by even more. Tucker Kraft finally beat the benched Isaiah Likely, 4.6 to 2.3, settling the world's least glamorous rivalry. The roster left just 6.2 points available. Changing the team name was apparently the largest adjustment required.
Unc Dak and the Juniors remain 0-3. Dak scored 18.94, but new backup Tyler Shough scored 24.8 on the bench. TreVeyon Henderson finally started after last week's benched 13.6 and contributed 3.4, while Jeremiyah Love's 19.4 stayed seated. Tee Higgins supplied 18, but the entire lineup finished at 87.74. Even the best possible version loses badly. Brand loyalty remains expensive, and this week it wasn't even the biggest expense.
The Professional Ball-Knower is beginning to justify the business card. Brock Purdy scored 31.28, George Kittle returned to the lineup for 23.2 and Davante Adams added 17.2. After starting Kittle for 2.2 in Week 1 and benching his 16 in Week 2, they finally synchronized watches. New kicker Chase McLaughlin added 12. Just 3 points went unused in a 5.46-point win.
D.Achane hang low made a terrific quarterback move and still lost. Sam Darnold arrived and scored 29.66, comfortably ahead of benched Justin Herbert's 13.74. Smith-Njigba added 30.36 and Garrett Wilson 21.7. And yes, Diggs sat again, but his 5.3 was below starting Rome Odunze's 5.9. We are retiring that particular complaint for one week.
The painful comparison was elsewhere. Chris Rodriguez scored 9.7 on the bench while the namesake Achane started for 1.7. That 8-point difference would flip a 5.46-point result. This is hindsight, but it still stings: a useful waiver quarterback, two excellent receivers, and the win was sitting next to the water cooler.
IR Merchant left zero points available for the second straight week. No bench player could improve the legal lineup. James Cook scored 19.4, Matthew Golden 18.5 and the Vikings defense 17. Bryce Young's 14.64 replaced Caleb Williams, whose zero stayed safely on the bench. Trey Smack scored 1 at kicker, so perfection here means using what you had, not owning a roster without problems.
Team Taylor finally started Mahomes. He scored 16.94 and beat benched Jalen Hurts's 13.62, so the quarterback decision finally gets a clean bill of health. Bowers scored 22.6 after two silent weeks, and Chris Boswell added 13. Unfortunately, Jonathan Taylor managed 8.2, David Montgomery 5.8 and J.K. Dobbins another 5.8. Even the best available lineup loses by 22.7. Last week's missing couch-cushion points became this week's empty couch.
The Retirees bounced back with Derrick Henry's 21.4, Lawrence's 20.78, McCaffrey's 19.6 and Christian Watson's 19.1. Terry McLaurin finally paid for the patience with 16.7 after 8.4 total across the first two weeks. They won by 31.92 despite starting the Packers defense for -2. Apparently retirement benefits include surviving that sort of deduction.
Colston Loveland scored 5.1, his best week yet, but newly acquired Juwan Johnson scored 19.3 on the bench. The fourth-round tight end is improving at the exact speed required to keep the joke alive. The roster still had 14.3 points available. Against this opponent, that qualified as restraint.
Maye set my lineup started Maye for 5.76 while Stafford scored 22.9 on the bench. Last week's headline has become a subscription service. Jordan Addison added 17.5 from the bench while Tetairoa McMillan started for 2.7. Those two changes together add 31.94, enough to reverse the 31.92-point loss by 0.02. The full best lineup reaches 145.7. Chase's 20.3 and Jaylen Warren's 19.1 deserved a manager with a calculator and less commitment to the branding.

Josh Allen scored 76.48 across the opening two weeks and lost both. This week he scored 18.96 and Hailee Steinfeld FC finally won. Fantasy football continues to reject merit as an organizing principle. Bijan Robinson carried the escape with 34.3, Michael Wilson added 20.4 and Tony Pollard finally started for 11.6. Luther Burden's 16.3 stayed on the bench, but a 43.88-point cushion allows some untidiness.
arjunpatelmb sank to 70.38, the week's lowest score. Coker's story has gone from 29.8 on the Week 1 bench to 10.6 and now 2.8 in the lineup. Saquon was benched for 8.5 while Emanuel Wilson started for 1.4. Burrow scored 22.58, but Jefferson, Nabers and Kincaid combined for just 12.1. The best available lineup still loses. The cupboard had points in it, just not dinner for ten.
Draft Receipts, Still Open
Stafford, the 12th-round backup, now has 55.98 points against sixth-round Maye's 27.6. Dirtbag Dynasty's final pick, McPherson, has 42. Bowers finally started repaying Team Taylor's third-round investment. Three unbeaten teams remain, and next week two of them have to play each other. We have ordered refreshments.
